I would have the patient feel his feelings when he wants to pull his hair, but restrain himself of doing it. We would repeat that excercise until the patient has stopped to pull his hair and have learnt other ways of expressing his anxiety. In gestalt therapy, you are encouraged to find your inner feelings when you have the urge to pull your hair. By getting to know your anxiety, you can develop other ways of handling it.
